Anna and Sam’s Romantic Catskills Wedding at Hotel Lilien
Anna & Sam’s Romantic Catskills Wedding at Hotel Lilien
As wedding photographers, one of our greatest joys at Apollo Fields Wedding Photography is getting to know our couples—their quirks, their stories, their love—and finding ways to reflect that through our lens. Anna and Sam’s wedding at Hotel Lilien in Tannersville, NY was one of those incredible days where every little detail felt infused with their personalities, humor, and love for each other.
From the very beginning, we knew Anna and Sam were going to be a fun, candid, and deeply connected couple to photograph. Their story started with ice cream by the Hudson River and a cocktail literally called “Love Potion,” which set the tone for a romance full of laughter, heartfelt gestures, and plenty of memorable quirks. So it was only fitting that their wedding day was just as layered—emotional, stylish, and filled with joy.
Getting Ready at Hotel Lilien
We started the day at the Hotel Lilien, a charming boutique hotel tucked in the Catskills. Anna got ready in the suite, while Sam prepped in one of the cozy queen rooms. The hotel itself felt like the perfect mix of modern Catskills chic and intimate lodge vibes, giving their morning a warm, relaxed feel.
One of our favorite parts of photographing weddings is catching those little in-between moments—like Anna’s laughter with her bridesmaid Olivia while sipping champagne, or Sam tying his tie with the help of Zack and Aubree, his wedding party crew.
Before the ceremony, Anna and Sam chose to share a first look in the staircase and library of the hotel. We love first looks because they give couples a private, emotional pause before the whirlwind of the day really kicks in. The way Sam lit up seeing Anna in her custom Christina Cocchiara gown was everything—and Anna’s expression made it clear that this was the start of a truly unforgettable day.
A Ceremony Full of Heart
The ceremony took place on the lawn of Hotel Lilien, surrounded by the lush greenery of the Catskills.
But Anna and Sam, in addition to their vows, they both took a moment to give a little speech during their ceremony, speaking directly and warmly to their guests. Together, they thanked their friends and family for showing up, for supporting them, and for being part of their lives. It was such a beautiful, intentional pause that made the entire gathering feel closer and more connected.
It’s moments like these where we as photographers step back, let things unfold, and just capture. The laughter, the tears, the way family leaned in a little closer—it’s what makes each wedding unique.
Pizza Over Cake (Because Why Not?)
Anna and Sam made a brilliant choice that fit them perfectly: instead of a traditional wedding cake, they opted for a pizza buffet. We’ve photographed a lot of creative food options over the years, but we have to admit—cutting into a pizza together is a first (and a new favorite)! It’s the kind of twist that shows how important it is for couples to make the day their own.
Candid Moments During Cocktail Hour
Cocktail hour on the lawn and under the tent at Hotel Lilien was lively and full of energy. Instead of slipping away for endless portraits, Anna and Sam chose to spend that time mingling with their guests. We loved this decision—it gave us the chance to capture so many candid, documentary-style moments, which is exactly what they’d told us they were most drawn to.
The laughter over glasses of wine, hugs from family who had traveled far, and kids running around barefoot on the grass—all of it painted a picture of the community that surrounds them.
Golden Hour & Dance Floor Magic
Later in the evening, we stole Anna and Sam away for a few golden-hour portraits. The Catskills sunset lit up the horizon, and in that soft light, they looked both cinematic and completely natural—just two people in love, soaking it all in.
After dinner, the celebration moved inside for their first dance to “A Sunday Kind of Love” by Etta James. It was timeless, romantic, and the perfect soundtrack to kick off a night of dancing. DJ Daniel Tipton from 74 Events kept the dance floor buzzing, and by the time we packed up our cameras, the room was electric with joy.
Reflections
As photographers, we always feel honored to witness love stories unfold, but Anna and Sam’s day struck a special chord with us. Part of that is personal—because we actually met Sam about ten years ago, when we were all bartending together on the Upper West Side in New York City. To see him now, standing alongside Anna with such love and joy in his eyes, felt like coming full circle in the best way.
Anna and Sam, thank you for inviting us into your world, trusting us to capture these moments, and reminding us once again why we do what we do. Your love is bold, joyful, and refreshingly authentic. We can’t wait to see where life takes you—from Hawaii on your honeymoon to the wine shop you dream of opening one day.
